May 17, 2010: Nic & Tristan Hit the Big Time Article

+ Check out this great article written by Andy Laughlin for a newspaper called Village Life in El Dorado Hills, California!

Fraternal twins Nic and Tristan Puehse, 12, of Shingle Springs, are becoming well-known in the media (and no doubt among preteen girls) as the skateboarding twins. They’ve made appearances on Fuel TV and Ellen DeGeneres. They’ve collaborated with The English Beat and L.L. Cool J on skate videos, and skated half pipes and pools alongside legends like Christian Hosoi and Duane Peters.

And this June they’ll be starring in their very own feature film, “Nic and Tristan Go Mega Dega.”

The movie features the boys as skateboarding brothers Nic and Tristan Fishtickle who accidentally break a family heirloom statue on the day of their parents’ anniversary - which also happens to be the same day as the titular Mega Dega Skate Competition. They scramble to try to fix the statue, outsmart a babysitter, escape an angry mob and make it to the Mega Dega ... all in the same day.

Co-starring Ariel Winter ("Modern Family"), Lindsey Shaw ("10 Things I Hate About You") and Bobb’e J Thompson ("Role Models"), the movie will be released on DVD June 8.

Nic and Tristan could hardly be described as “ordinary” 12-year-olds, but stardom hasn’t gone to their heads. They’re both friendly, intelligent and well-spoken. They enjoy many of the same activities as their friends from the old El Dorado Hills neighborhood (the Puehses moved to Shingle Springs in 2005). They’re a bit competitive, each pushing the other toward the next big trick.

But even with a half-pipe ramp in their backyard, they only spend a few hours a week skateboarding, taking plenty of time for their studies (the boys and their younger sister, Tasha, have been home schooled by their mother, Caryn, since kindergarten) and other activities like tennis and bike rides, their dad, Mike Puehse, said.

The brothers had their introduction to skateboarding at Cumming’s Family Park in Folsom, where they learned to ollie and carve on the half pipe at age five.

“We used to go wakeboarding on Folsom Lake,” Mike Puehse said of the early days. “Then they wanted to learn to skate.”

“We decided to check out the skatepark in Folsom,” Nic said. “We were like, five, and our skateboards were almost as tall as we were. The other kids laughed at us allot. But we got better.”

By age eight, the boys were consistently bringing home trophies from local skate competitions - most of which ended up stored in boxes in the attic.

“The boys did a ton of comps, mostly in their first three years,” Mike Puehse said. “It was the same kids over and over.”

Bored with the competitive scene, they decided to focus primarily on learning new tricks to showcase in videos on YouTube, hoping to get the attention of fans or potential sponsors to help support their habit.

It worked.

Though not quite an overnight sensation, Nic and Tristan racked up hundreds, then thousands, then hundreds of thousands of views of their videos over the following months. They eventually got offers for demo shoots, giving them the opportunity to travel for months at a time overseas. They skated in China for an action sports company, and were lucky enough to film at the famous Cayman Islands Black Pearl Park - the world’s largest skatepark.

They also got the opportunity to collaborate with some high-caliber musicians, with The English Beat providing the soundtrack to one video and L.L Cool J performing for another.

The movie deal happened last year, after Mike Puehse made a few calls to production companies, pitching the idea of featuring Nic and Tristan in a feature film.

“I got a call back within one week,” he said. “And we were filming within five months.

“It was a very eye-opening experience for the boys,” he continued. “They were used to seeing crew around shooting their skateboard videos. But nothing like this before ... Tristan got his very first, real-life kiss on that set.”

For now, Nic and Tristan are practicing their tricks and eagerly awaiting the release of their movie. To catch up with the skateboarding twins, visit skateboardingtwins.com or visit facebook.com/gomegadega.
